What does Alleima have in common with a music shop in Chicago?

The answer is a small, but crucial component that makes trumpets last a lifetime.

Schilke Music isn’t your typical Alleima customer. The small music shop in Chicago includes a workshop where trumpets and trombones are tailor-made to customer requests. A crucial component in the trumpets are valves made from tubes in steel grade Alleima® Alloy 400.

Schilke Music has been in business since the 1950s and is one of the most highly regarded musical instrument makers in the world with a know-how that’s been passed down through generations. Most of the 27 employees are musicians themselves, carrying on the craftsmanship with pride.

“I always wanted to be a trumpet player and working here has just made me fall in love also with the manufacturing part of it. I've learned a lot being here. We say we're like the Lamborghini of trumpets and I think that’s very true,” says Chris Jones, trumpet maker and player since the 4th grade.

Alleima® Alloy 400

A copper-nickel alloy with the following characteristics: High strength and toughness, good bendability, excellent corrosion resistance in many environments

Materials that make sweet music

Creating a trumpet is not an assembly line type of job. There’s a lot of science behind working with materials to try to get the right sound. “The Alleima product we use makes a big difference in how well our instruments last and how well they play. The valves are key parts as they direct the airflow and designate different notes and combinations when playing,” says Chris.

The product used for the valves is a cold-drawn tube in Alleima® Alloy 400. It’s a copper-nickel alloy with high strength and toughness, good bendability, and excellent corrosion resistance in many environments. The quality of the material is essential for withstanding the environment inside the instruments.

“It's kind of a marine environment. There's a lot of corrosion and the valves wear from being pressed down. The material properties of the tubes are a huge consideration for us and impact the in-house processing we do,” Chris adds.

The materials were supplied by the Alleima production unit in Scottdale, Pennsylvania, USA.

In tune with supporting our customers, whatever their industry

Alleima is proud to advance materials technology that makes industrial products and processes more efficient, profitable, and sustainable. But when it comes to making art, we can blow our own trumpet, too.

“We support artists and players all around the world. To me, it's interesting that we're in the music business and Alleima is in the manufacturing industry, but there is a connection, and you are contributing to making art,” ends Chris.

We take great pride in working with individuals like Chris, who bring a personal touch to their products. Unlike the typical stainless-steel tubes found in most Industries, the creations made with our precision Tubes are a testament to creativity, craftsmanship, and uniqueness. It's a pleasure to collaborate with customers who make something beautiful—because their work inspires us to keep pushing the boundaries of what’s possible.
