For pump and valve manufacturers, material selection is rarely about a single performance attribute. Critical internal components must balance strength, corrosion resistance, fatigue performance, and long-term reliability, while operating under pressure in aggressive chemical or energy environments. As operating windows tighten and design margins shrink, clarity around its mechanical properties and capabilities becomes increasingly important.
Trusted quality and performance
What differentiates Alleima® HighN50 is not a new alloy system, but clearly defined delivery conditions, strict production control and consistent mechanical properties, reducing uncertainty around strength levels and material behaviour. Alleima® HighN50 is also known as XM-19 and widely referred to as Nitronic® 50 in the industry. It delivers the same proven chemistry and performance profile as XM-19, supported by Alleima’s production capabilities and global supply network.
What is HighN50?
Alleima® HighN50 is a high nitrogen austenitic stainless steel developed to deliver a strong balance of strength, corrosion resistance, and toughness. Compared with standard austenitic stainless steels, it offers significantly higher yield strength, two to four times higher than standard 316 stainless steel grades, while maintaining good ductility and resistance to cracking. Alleima® HighN50 also performs well in chloride containing environments and provides solid resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, with a Pitting Resistance Equivalent (PRE) number of 34, comparable to standard duplex 2205-type grades.
For pump and valve designers, this means a material that supports robust designs, long service life, and predictable performance without the complexity of moving to higher alloyed systems.
HighN50-A vs HighN50-HS
What truly differentiates Alleima® HighN50 for pump and valve manufacturers is the fact that it is available in two distinct delivery conditions, each designed to support different performance priorities. Engineers can match HighN50-A (annealed) or HighN50-HS (hot-rolled) to actual operating requirements.
- HighN50-A
Supplied in an annealed condition, this version emphasizes corrosion resistance, toughness, and dimensional stability. It is typically selected for components where exposure to aggressive media is the main concern and extreme mechanical strength is not the primary driver. - HighN50-HS
Manufactured in a hot working processes, this version offers substantially higher yield and tensile strength, making it well suited for components subjected to high loads, pressure cycling, or mechanical stress.
Understanding this distinction helps engineers select the right material condition for each component, rather than over specifying or compromising on performance.
Pump and valve applications in focus
Across both pump and valves, Alleima® HighN50 supports reliable operation in chemical processing, petrochemical production, energy generation, and other demanding industries.
In pump applications, typical uses include shafts, impellers, wear rings, sleeves, and fasteners. HighN50-A is often chosen for parts primarily exposed to corrosive fluids, while HighN50-HS supports highly loaded shafts and rotating components where strength and fatigue resistance matter.
For valve applications, HighN50-HS (hot-rolled) also supports compact designs and resistance to deformation under pressure, while the annealed condition provides corrosion resistance and toughness in harsh service environments.
Availability and supply confidence
To help pump and valve manufacturers reduce lead times and material related risk, Alleima’s global distribution partners, support quick access to standard sizes. Production orders are also available for specific dimensions or volumes, providing flexibility for both series manufacturing and project driven needs.
A clear choice for pump and valve designers
Alleima® HighN50 is not an unfamiliar grade, it is the XM-19 or Nitronic® 50 material engineers already trust, delivered with clarity around performance, processing and availability. By offering two defined delivery conditions, Alleima enables more precise specification and supports the design of pump and valve components that perform reliably in demanding service environments.
