Introduction
With sustainability-focused efforts increasing globally to achieve Net Zero Emission by 2050 – or by 2060 for Indonesia – the oil and gas industry plays a big part in supporting the goal of reducing Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions through sustainable measures, such as CCS (Carbon Capture and Storage) and CCUS (Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage).
In Indonesia, the demand for energy is forecasted to grow by 4.9% annually, and this is due to the strong economic growth, especially post-COVID. The main focus of the local oil and gas industry is currently on finding more hydrocarbon reserves to increase the production of petroleum to satisfy this demand. This commitment can be seen through initiatives such as the Memorandum of Understanding agreement between the Indonesian government and companies like Pertamina for the Masela Project, as well as ENI’s efforts to fast-track the development of the Indonesia Deepwater Development (IDD) project to increase its exploration in the region.
In March 2023, the Indonesian government also created a new regulation that mandates oil and gas companies to capture and store their carbon emissions. At present, Indonesia is in the process of studying and preparing for around 15 CCS/CCUS projects, with most of the projects forecasted to commence operations by 2030.
CCS or CCUS processes can utilize atmospheric Carbon Dioxide (CO2) as well as carbon originating from various industrial activities. However, such processes require strong and reliable materials to ensure the security of wells and the system.
These were some of the conversations that we had observed during the Indonesian Petroleum Association (IPA) Convex 2023 in July. This year’s event, which was one of the largest and most important oil and gas events in Southeast Asia, brought together oil and gas industry leaders, policymakers, and experts to discuss topics surrounding "Enabling Oil & Gas Investment and Energy Transition for Energy Security".
As one of the regular exhibitors, we leveraged the event to connect with our long-term customers and partners, build relationships with new potential clients, and learn from the industry as a whole. We were also excited to re-introduce ourselves in Indonesia as Alleima.
