The materials specified for Vasa replacement bolts are a combination of SAF™ 2507 super-duplex and SAF™ 2707 HD hyper-duplex stainless steels. These advanced materials feature dual properties that are vital to this project – excellent corrosion resistance and very high mechanical strength that can withstand the museum's humid environment as well as the weight of Vasa's 900 tonne hull.

Material expertise

After 50 years in the humid environment of the museum that bears its name, steel bolts installed during the Vasa's reconstruction in 1961 emitted harmful iron to the ship's oak hull. Each bolt had to be replaced.
