Kanthal is more than a company; it's a community where your ambition and inquisitiveness will be nurtured. We are a team that celebrates creativity, encourages exploration, and values each member's journey toward personal and professional growth. Are you passionate about contributing to a more sustainable society? Do you have an interest in the electrification of industries and the development of new technologies for energy production and conversion?

Kanthal is seeking a master’s student with a keen interest in materials technology and chemistry to help us advance our knowledge in high-temperature process gas heating using Kanthal materials.

Master thesis project (30 credits)

Location: Division of Energy and Materials, Department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Chalmers University of Technology and Kanthal AB, Hallstahammar

Duration: 6 months

Assignment Overview:

The future is dependent on the change towards a more sustainable society. This is driving development of several new techniques, both in the field of energy production/conversion, production and recirculation. A number of those techniques involves heating of process gases, e.g. hydrogen, to high temperature. That sets new demands on the materials used.

This master thesis work will focus on understanding the behaviour of different alloys in hydrogen-containing atmospheres at high temperatures. Your work will include the following:

  • Background literature study
  • General specimen preparation.
  • Isothermal furnace exposures in hydrogen containing atmospheres.
  • High quality cross-section preparations.
  • Hands-on work with various analysis techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX).
  • Summarising the results in a report.

The company is based in Hallstahammar and it is desirable to be physically present on site in Hallstahammar during some part of the work. However, the exposures and analysis work will be performed at the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Chalmers University of Technology.

Your Profile: We are looking for candidates currently pursuing a master's degree in materials technology, chemistry, or a related field, with an interest in corrosion and material science. You are a fluent communicator in English and knowledge of Swedish is a plus.
